By that I mean a formed idea that you’ve already worked out in advance of starting the—though I gather Yeats always worked this way, from a prose epitome, which he’d then deepen to a music. We have three minds, I reckon, one of which is the body, while the other two are forms of mentation: daylight consciousness and dreaming consciousness. If one of these is absent from a work, it isn’t complete; and if one or two of them are suppressed, kept out of sight, then the whole thing—whatever it is you’ve created—is in bad faith. Thinking in a fusion of our three minds is how humans do naturally think, at any level above the trivial. The questions to ask of any creation are: What’s the dream dimension in this? How good is the forebrain thinking, but also how good is the dream here? Where’s the dance in it, and how good is that? How well integrated are all three; or if there is dissonance, is that productive? And, finally, what larger poem is this one in? Who or what does it honor? Who does it want to kill?”

- Les Murray

Praying Drunk

Praying Drunk:
An amazing poem deftly written in blank verse.

Solved: Moving image attachments between pages in WordPress

Uploading and attaching an image to a page is dead simple in WordPress 3+. Unfortunately, changing the page that an image is attached to isn’t so simple. You can either delete the image and upload it again to a new page, or you can open up phpMyAdmin and get to know your database tables. I frequently use WordPress pages as defacto image galleries, and frequently need to move images between those pages, making this a frequent pain in my keister.

No more. Today I finally coded a quick solution to the problem.

This code adds a drop-down menu to the Media > Edit screen that lists all of the pages in your WordPress site, and allows you to choose between them. Saving your selection reassigns the image attachment to the selected page.

Here’s what the new Media > Edit screen looks like:

Note that the drop-down menu only appears for images that were originally attached to a page. It will not appear inside the Media > Edit screen for images that were originally assigned to a post. (The code could easily be adapted to include both posts and pages, though.)

To use this, copy the code, and paste it into the functions.php file within your WordPress theme to activate it.

This code draws heavily on Andy Blackwell’s tutorial on creating custom fields for image attachments at Nettuts, which was the only documentation I could find on the attachment_fields_to_edit and attachment_fields_to_save hooks.

Probably I’ll package all this up into a handy plugin as soon as I get a minute. Until then, get to know your functions.php file. It’s a terribly handy little thing.

Oh, and in case I forgot to mention it, I’m now available for contract work.

Update: Here’s another solution for detaching and reattaching images from posts.

An outtake from tonight’s studio shoot with Nick.

An outtake from tonight’s studio shoot with Nick.

MARRIAGE PANTS

MARRIAGE PANTS:
A fun poem for the dreadful emergency that is each and every Monday morning.

Condolence Note: Los Angeles

Condolence Note: Los Angeles:
A poem of iPods, etiquette, and loss.

I’m getting better in the studio.

I’m getting better in the studio.

Choir by Bruce Bond

Choir by Bruce Bond:
Breathtaking poem by Bruce Bond.

"It’s the quality of not grabbing for entertainment the minute we feel a slight edge of boredom..."

“It’s the quality of not grabbing for entertainment the minute we feel a slight edge of boredom coming on.
Hacker on tenure:

What bothers us, too, is that over 300,000 professors have it. That’s a tremendous number. What that means is these people never leave. There’s hardly any turnover in the senior ranks—not just at Harvard, Yale, and Stanford but at small colleges in Kentucky, everywhere. You go to a campus and over two thirds of the faculty have been there at least 25 years. They begin to stagnate. In many ways, they become infantilized, embroiled in ideological issues like faculty parking.
